There is a story in the Puranas that when the time of creation came, a luminous lotus appeared from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma appeared from that lotus. Even after looking around, when he did not see anyone, he went into the water through its stem to find out the base of the lotus. Still he did not know anything. At last he returned back to the lotus. After this, he received instruction from an unexpressed voice to perform penance, after which he performed penance for a thousand divine years. Pleased with his penance, God granted him His glimpse and made him see His world also. The symbolism of this mythological story is very deep and touching. In this story, Lord Vishnu is the instrumental cause of creation while the luminous lotus is the material cause of creation. This lotus has an umbilical cord connection with God. It means that the material cause of creation originates from God and after being empowered by God, it performs the task of creation, maintenance and destruction of creation. The first entity arising from this material cause has been called Brahma ji here. What is called Mahat in Sankhya philosophy is called Brahma in the Puranas. This is the first product of Trigunatmika Maya, the secondary material cause of the creation and is the father of the entire creation. When Brahma ji was born from the stem of a lotus, the mother who gave birth to him i.e. Divine Shakti and the cause of his origin, God, were close to him, but due to being born from Maya, the great intelligence i.e. Brahma ji remained ignorant of the presence of God. And to find its end, he kept wandering in that canal but was unable to find its end. Ultimately, when he has a concentrated mind in surrender, he sees God. This means that in order to have the glimpse of God, the living being should make an effort to concentrate his thoughts spread all around in the middle of the eyebrows with a sense of surrender.
