Lost in a physical dream? Dive deep into the subtle and causal worlds to reclaim your true self with consciousness. This journey through ancient wisdom offers a path beyond darkness and inertia, towards the radiant heart of who you are.
The universe is centered on the principle of reflection. The body is the image of the universe itself, hence the same principle applies to the body also. The physical body appears to be just a heap of bones, feces, blood, skin etc. as if it has no consciousness.

The world has two divisions called the universe (macrocosm) and body (microcosm). Next to the universe, there are three subdivisions called causal, subtle and gross which Guru Nanak called Sarmkhand, Gyankhand and Dharmakhand respectively.
The universe is centered on the principle of reflection. The subtle world is the reflection of the causal world while the gross world is the reflection of the subtle world.
Out of these three, in the causal world the conscious element and the inanimate element are together and different in the same way as in our world sunlight and shadow are together but different. In the subtle world, the conscious element and the inanimate element are together in the same way as in our world the image of water and the things reflected in it are together. In the physical world, the conscious element and the inanimate element are completely together. Here the conscious principle is experienced as if one sees a dream whose truth is always in doubt. Therefore, living beings here behave as if the conscious element does not exist. It begets darkness, ignorance and inertia in the physical world.
Now we also know that the body is the image of the universe itself, hence the same principle applies to the body also.
There are three subdivisions of the body which are called causal body, subtle body and gross body. The consciousness combined with pure intelligence and the Jiva reside in the causal body. The intellect becomes impure in the subtle body due to which the consciousness becomes hidden in the same way as an image gets distorted in muddy and choppy water. The physical body appears to be just a heap of bones, feces, blood, skin etc. as if it has no consciousness. Quote from ‘Nirbhay, Nirvair, Akalmurti’ 11.
Key Highlights:
The universe and the body are two sides of the same coin, both divided into three: causal, subtle, and gross.
Each level reflects the one above it, with increasing separation between consciousness and inert matter as we move from causal to gross.
In the physical world (gross), consciousness is shrouded in doubt and misidentified with dreams, leading to darkness, ignorance, and inertia.
Similarly, the physical body masks the inner conscious reality due to the limitations of intellect and senses.
Recognizing this nested structure encourages us to look beyond the physical and seek the subtle and causal realms within ourselves and the universe.
What the Text Tells and How it Helps:
The text challenges our limited perception of reality, encouraging us to:
Transcend physical appearances: Recognize the deeper reality of subtle and causal realms within ourselves and the universe. (There's more below!)
Appreciate interconnectedness: Understand how every level reflects and influences the others, like ripples in a pond.
Seek inner consciousness: Look beyond physical distractions and mental limitations to uncover our true nature.
Challenge assumptions: Question ingrained beliefs about consciousness and explore its deeper potential.
The entire discussion revolves around understanding its presence and influence across different levels of existence, both within the body and the universe. Recognizing the limitations of physical perception and seeking the true nature of consciousness is the underlying message.
By shifting our perspective from the physical to the subtle and causal, the text aims to empower us to cultivate awareness, overcome ignorance, and find deeper meaning in existence.
